Venture Graduates and Excellence IT: Championing Graduate Development

When IT Managed Service and Security Provider Excellence IT were searching for a new Digital Marketer, it was clear they wanted something different. Having worked with Cardiff Capital Region’s Venture Graduates before, Excellence IT were keen to connect with Venture’s talented pool of high calibre graduates to find their next addition to the team.

Championing Fresh Perspectives

Venture Graduates is an advocate for graduate skills – recognising the importance of bringing fresh perspectives and ideas to organisations across Southeast Wales. The partnership with Excellence IT showcases the fantastic result of two organisations working together to champion young professionals.

Anne Beer, Director of Operations and HR for Excellence IT, shares her reasoning behind the organisation’s ongoing collaboration with Venture Graduates:

“When our last Marketing Manager left, we wanted someone who had a fresh approach to digital marketing rather than more traditional marketing activities. We looked to Venture to tap into the talented Graduates in South Wales.

“When we needed a new resource, I was keen to engage with the team at Venture again. Our Graduate Digital Content Marketing Lead, Calum Edwards, is a great asset to the team and has fitted in very well. We’ve been really impressed with his skills, and he’s brought a completely fresh approach to our marketing activity which was exactly what we wanted.”

Diving into Digital Marketing

As a Graduate Digital Content Marketing Lead, Calum has the opportunity to be independent and have autonomy from the beginning of his career – allowing him to take charge of his career development.

He shares his experiences as a solo digital marketer:

“Whilst daunting, the most exciting part of my role is having the freedom to implement my ideas and learn on the job. Knowing the team put their trust in me to actually make the job my own has played a huge part in my development, but also the enjoyment in my workday.”

With this independence, Calum explains how he continues to refine his skills across the entire marketing mix:

The most challenging aspect for me is continually maturing into a T-shaped marketer. Learning to enhance skills across the board, from SEO and email marketing to videography and web design and development is challenging, but as a one-person marketing department, it’s essential to have a diverse skillset.

Graduate Growth and Development

Venture Graduates have a track record of working with organisations committed to developing graduate skillsets, understanding how vital it is to support graduates in their early career.

Through Venture and Excellence IT, Calum has had the freedom to enhance his creative development:

“I’ve learnt that time away from the desk can be more productive than time at it. Most ideas and creativity come from taking a break, having a clear mind, peace and quiet or conversations with colleagues. I hope to build more ‘creative time’ into my work blocks this year.”

As an organisation which advocates for new and innovative perspectives, Anne explains why Excellence IT continue to work with Venture:

“Venture Graduates were far more responsive than a recruitment agency and were really focused on the graduates’ needs – making sure they were matched to an organisation where they could grow and develop.”
